About the memorial: Elaborately carved stone wheel cross on straight shaft, octagonal plinth and two-stepped octagonal base. The inscription and names are incised into the faces of the plinth. The memorial is located in the north west corner of the churchyard. The memorial was cleaned and repaired in 2017, with a grant from the War Memorials Trust and local contributions.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE SAILORS AND SOLDIERS OF THE EMPIRE IN THE GREAT WAR FOR HUMAN LIBERTY 1914-1918 AND ESPECIALLY THESE WINCHELSEA MEN WHOSE GRAVES ARE IN THE LAND WHERE THEY FELL BUT WHOSE NAMES WILL LONG BE HELD IN HONOUR IN THEIR NATIVE TOWN. ALSO IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE 1939 - 1945 WAR. THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE

The names inscribed on the Monument for World War 1 are Archie Balding, Percy Freeman, Robert Griffin, Henry Patch, Noel Patch, Frederick G Penny, George Snashall, Norman Streeton and Thomas Tiltman. The names inscribed on the Monument for World War 2 are Donald Alford, Stanley Breeds, George Cook, Robert Jenkins, Ronald McDonald, Terence Montague, Anthony Stuart and Harry Willeard.
