The name of The Caledonian's doorman is featured in this Roll of Honour and a brief story about him can be read in the book "The Caledonian Edinburgh" by authors Andreas Augustin and Roddy Martine as follows:'The First World War changed many things. After hostilities were announced on 4 August 1914, many of the Caledonian’s members of staff left for military service, never to return. In the meantime, the hotel remained open despite supplies being rationed. A spirit of survival prevailed among the population, not least when in 1916, a zeppelin raid took place and bombs were dropped within 100 yards of the hotel, shattering some of the windows. 
Sandy James, who had been the Caledonian’s doorman since shortly before it had opened, was called up. When the war was over, he returned to his post with four wound stripes on his left sleeve, all – according to his daughter – acquired through the accidental discharge of his own rifle! Sandy was to become an institution at the Caley, remaining resplendent in his braided commissionaire’s uniform for the ensuing 20 years.'
