About the memorial: An attractive small structure of a Chinese Temple with typical tented roof supported by 4 brown marble columns at each corner. It commemorates the Royal Navy sailors killed during the Boxer rebellion in China. From the roof hangs a decorative Taku bell. The original was taken by the sailors from the cruiser Orlando* after they helped capture the North West Fort at Taku, guarding the Pei-Ho river in June 1900. The bell was returned to the Tanggu district in 2005. Chinese officials agreed to replace the bell with a replica, which was reinstated into the memorial around 2006. Each face of the base has a white tablet with dedications and names. *During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, sailors from HMS Orlando formed part of the force led by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Seymour attempting to relieve the British Legation in Beijing.
