About the memorial: The land on which the Memorial stands was given to the village of Harpur Hill by the old Buxton Lime Firm Co Ltd for the erection of a War Memorial around 1924. The company allowed their workmen who were former workmates of the dead soldiers to complete the transportation and building of the stonework with its surrounding walls and pillars. The Memorial on Burlow Road is unique and was chosen because of Harpur Hills links to the quarry industry. It is a rough huge boulder of limestone which remains in its natural state weighing approx 9 ton supported on a pedestal of random limestone work A tablet affixed is bearing the names of the brave local Quarrymen who died in the First World War. It is set in an enclosed area by walls and posts all made with the same limestone and has ornamental chains linked to the posts. The stone for this work came from the local Hoffman Quarry by the old road at the back of Burlow Cottages on a bogie.(An assembly of four or six wheels at one time used for forming a pivoted support at either end of a railway coach). The bogie got fast at one point and was left for two days while they tried to get it moving again on the small road at the back of the cottages. The men had a hard time getting it down from the quarry and into place. But it was a labour of love and pride in memory of the 13 local young men who died in the First World War. Edward Bennett, Thomas Blood, Francis George Pegg, William Bennett, Ernest (Birchinall) Birchenall, James Mellor, Daniel Blood, Richard Bramwell , Thomas Henry Tideswell, James Mycock, William Edwin Bennett, Joseph Riley, Robert Wardle. In 1928 The Memorial was unveiled, dedicated and handed over to the village of Harpur Hill. And became a Grade 2 Listed Structure in 2003 after a campaign by local people. A Remembrance Service is held each year.
