About the memorial: Memorial to civilians and servicemen killed in World War I ; 1921, by Philip B. Bennison. Limestone, ashlar and rockfaced. Raked, stepped plinth to square, coursed, rockfaced pedestal with ashlar quoins at angles, roll-moulding at base and chamfered cornice. Square shaft supports a further pedestal, with chamfered plinth and cornice, surmounted by a draped bronze figure of Triumphant Youth. The four faces of the uppermost pedestal bear sculptured bronze achievements of arms, the seal of Hartlepool and a cartouche dated 1914. The east face of the shaft is inscribed: "FOR US THEY DIED"; west face: "LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND". The names are on 5 bronze panels on a Portland stone wall behind- 4 of the 5 panels have the names of 366 citizens who fell in the war itself,. the 5th has 52 names who were killed in the Hartlepool Bombardment of 16 December 1914. The memorial for casualties between 1919 and 1967 is on the reverse and is recorded as WMO/258434. A Book of Remembrance was produced in 1920 in preparation for both this and the Central Hartlepool Memorial (WMO/162592). Although, as a mass produced item, it is not a Memorial in it's own right it is a very valuable adjunct to the memorial.
