About the memorial: Located close to Admiralty Arch near to St James' Park.--------------------------------------------------------- Westminster Walk: This memorial was unveiled by an electronic remote control during a memorial service in St Paul’s Cathedral. It shows the bronze winged figure of Peace holding an olive branch subduing a horse, which represents War. [Note: there is a distinction between the emblem of an olive (peace) and the laurel (victory)]. The reliefs tell the stories behind the activities of war at the end of the 19th century: artillerymen moving their weapons over hilly ground; Royal Artillery Corps in action; horses, men and artillery being rushed into action. The 2nd Boer War involved large numbers of troops from many British possessions trying to overcome a rebellion by the Boers (farmers). It ended with the conversion of Boer republics into British colonies which later became South Africa. At first there was open warfare but then a long and bitter guerrilla campaign. British losses were high from disease as well as fighting. The Royal Artillery are known as “The Gunners” and had its origins as far back as King Henry 8th. Sulptor: William Colton>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: From here go down The Mall towards Trafalgar Square and on the far side of the road find the Royal Marines memorial. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
