About the memorial: One of the enemy's guns from the Siege of Cadiz, now mounted on a cast-metal dragon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Westminster Walk: Between 1810-1812 the French laid siege to the large Spanish Naval Base of Cadiz. which had become the centre of power after the occupation of Madrid in 1808. It was surrounded by 60,000 French troops but only defended by 2000 Spanish soldiers. Various attempts were made to remove the French but eventually, at the Battle of Salamanca, they were forced to retreat with help from the Duke of Wellington’s British army. During the battle a French (which could fire a shell nearly 5km) was captured and then presented to Britain’s Prince Regent to mark the lifting of the siege, the liberation of southern Spain and the efforts of the Duke of Wellington. It became known as “Prince Regent’s Bomb” and was unveiled on his 54th birthday. The ceremonial base was made at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich in 1814. It created this large brass sculpture of a winged monster, called Geryon, with two tails entwined around the canon. In China dragons were traditionally used to symbolise power strength and good luck. Thus the Emperor of China used it to show his imperial dominance. In Chinese daily language excellent & outstanding people are compared to the dragon. At the front of the memorial are the Prince of Wales feathers. The Latin inscription on the north side is translated in English on the south side.>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Route: Now proceed diagonally across the parade ground to the famous Guards memorial on the edge of St James’ Park. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
