About the memorial: A Portland stone Latin cross bottony surmounting a slender hexagonal stone pillar, upon a square plinth (15 feet high, base 5ft square) on which the names of 9 men who died are listed, in date order of their death, listing their ranks, initials, surname and unit. Sitting upon a square base which bears the inscription in raised letters on its four sides: To the Glory of God and in Perpetual Memory of Soldiers who died in the Great War 1914-1919, 8 of them died in the Ampton Red Cross Hospital and one of them in the Lewisham Hospital.The memorial is set in front of the graves of the men who are commemorated. The monument, designed by the Vicar of Ampton, Rev. W.A.Wickham and constructed by Messrs Hanchett fo Bury St.Edmunds, was unveiled on 15 Nov 1919, attended by: Sir Courtenay Warner. Ampton Hall (a mile away) was a Red Cross Hospital where 40 soldiers died during the 1914-18 War, of which 32 were buried near their homes. The other 8 were buried at Ingham as there was no room in Ampton Churchyard. The 9th name on the memorial (Parson) was an Ingham man. Reported by Bury Free Press on 22nd November 191
