About the memorial: The memorial is sited on the terrace overlooking the river. It can be reached through Somerset House or from Waterloo Bridge. The urn on the top symbolises death. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk: This regiment was created in 1798 from volunteers from the Bank of England and were also known as the Somerset House Volunteers. In 1802 they were renamed The Bank of England Corps but disbanded in 1814. In 1860 they were reformed as 4 units of the Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps from employees of the Audit Office, Post Office, Inland Revenue with their headquarters in Somerset House (used for such public offices). In 1898 they were renamed the Prince of Wales’ Own (Civil Service) Volunteer Rifle Corps, and in 1908 and 1920 again renamed “15th County of London Battalion, London Regiment, Prince of Wales Own Civil Service Volunteers”!!!!!!!. The Corps went to France on 17th March 1915 and while there were serving men alive an annual dinner was held on this date The Corps motto is “Ich Dien” German for “I serve”. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Route

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
