About the memorial: Polish Armed Forces: The Polish Air Force Memorial is situated at the side of the roundabout above the A40 Western Avenue where the A4180, West End Road, branches off to the north. Immediately behind the memorial site is RAF Northolt, which is significant because it was at that location that the Polish fighter squadrons were based during the Battle of Britain. The memorial is in a paved and landscaped area surrounded by an iron railing fence with access gates. A tall square stone column is the main structure, and this is surmounted by a bronze eagle. The names and numbers of the Polish Air Force fighter and bomber squadrons are arranged on the face of the column that overlooks a pond. A stone screen, with wording, is positioned to the left and right of the column. At the rear of the memorial, at a lower level, and facing each other, are two semi-circular walls bearing the names of the 2,165 aircrew who lost their lives fighting alongside the allies 1940 to 1945.
