About the memorial: Memorial is sited on a traffic island in the middle of Holborn. It is almost opposite the former Prudential Building (Waterhouse Square). A helmeted figure of a Private of the Royal Fusiliers in Service Dress with 1908 Pattern Equipment, holding a rifle behind him in his right hand and with his right leg raised on a stone. The figure surmounts a tall pedestal, bearing Second World War bomb damage, which bears the inscription. Sculptor: Albert Toft -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- City of London West Walk: The Royal Fusiliers was originally called the Ordnance Regiment formed from 2 companies of the Tower of London Guard in the mid 17th century. In 1685 it was formed into a fusilier regiment of infantryman armed with a light flintlock muskets (from French word fusil). They fought in Canada and in the Wellington’s Peninsular war. In WWI there were 76 battalions and a heavy loss of life. They were actively involved in WWII. The memorial previously had a heavy black wax applied to its surface which hid the greenish patination below and its situation in the middle of a heavily trafficked road led to a general deterioration. In 2003 it was re-furbished with the removal of the black wax and re-patinated with a brown colour and is now annually maintained. The Royal Fusiliers Museum is in the Tower of London and we will visit the regimental chapel later in the walk. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Route:
