About the memorial: The Manchester Cenotaph was designed by Lutyens and erected in 1924. It is constructed of Portland stone and consists of a central Cenotaph with a carving of a soldier laid to rest on top. On the sides of the central column are carved the Arms of Manchester. There are two smaller obelisks to the sides of the central cenotaph. Between these at the rear is a stone sarcophagus. The memorial is on the site of the former St Peters Square and is set within a later formalised memorial garden area. Also on the site are a number of smaller memorials to other conflicts. There is also a cross marking the site of the altar of the former church which is grade II listed this is noted as having group value in the list description through its association with the Cenotaph. The memorial was moved across St Peter's Square in 2014/15 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Manchester Walk
