About the memorial: This war memorial is a Portland stone column set on a granite plinth with bronze female figure on top holding broken chains - the Spirit of Freedom.. On the plinth and stone wall behind are large bronze plaques. The column is set within iron railings which enclose a paved area and soft landscaping. Another tablet was added in 2006 to commemorate those who have been lost in conflicts post-1945.

Refurbishment works carried out May to November 2019
•	Repair, reconditioning and redecoration of all the iron work railings that surround the monument These are earlier than the war monument and were in place when the area was a garden area, with an oak tree in the centre and as such are wrought iron railings from the early Victorian period.
•	They were dismantled and removed from site, to be overhauled in a workshop that allows care to be given to the metalwork without the pressure of weather conditions. The new elements were wrought in iron and welded in place. Great care was taken in then transference of the railings and in the refixing of the railings and their return to site.
•	The repair of the piers between the railings; these piers had altered since their initial inception; when put in place originally,the half height piers supported plant pots on top, which can be seen in old photos and amongst the research prior to the work taking place. The present configuration of a concrete capping is synonymous to the WW I memorial put in situ and the intent of the area changing to be a memorial as opposed to a protected garden area The cappings were repaired with Prompt roman cement to reinstate the original arrisses which had been lost in the weathering of the original coating. The colour of the copied cappings was lightened t o match the mortar and to be more akin to the original colour of the clay centres to the pillars, in accordance with evidence from photographs at the time that the war memorial was opened. This work was undertaken by someone skilled in lime plasterwork in Cornwall, who delivered the elements to site for inclusion by West Access.
•	Cleaning of the bronze; a number of trials took place to clean the bronze plaques and to reaffix the plaques on the WWI I memorial. A significant number of trials were undertaken, again with expert consultants to ensure the best results were achieved. Similarly, the plaques were reaffixed with fixings more akin to the design intent of the original plaques.
•	Stonework cleaning and repair, trials were undertaken with the poultice system to clean the stonework of the staining from the bronze plaques with the best results being achieved at determined temperatures and consistency of poultice mix.In tandem with this, all mortar repairs were undertaken on the WWII monument and on the WWI column, including repair at the base of the where the previous fixings for the wreaths had been removed.
•	Underpinning of the WWII monument; the condition of the ground was examined under the monument to determine the reason for the monument tipping toward the eastern end. There is a leaking pipe and thus water running through the ground adjacent to this area that may have caused some removal of the lower ground level, but the monument had been underpinned before and therefore no further work was undertaken in the assurance that this was all going to be sound.
•	General paving; the paving around the war memorial was repointed and cleaned and reset where necessary to accommodate the new ironwork against the entrance gates. A number of trials took place to choose the colour and consistency of the mortar, the final approved being consistent with other colours and mortars on site.
