About the memorial: The memorial is at the main road junction in the centre of the village. The front with the WW1 inscription and names faces the street so for safety reasons the wreaths are laid at the left side which faces a car park.Looking closely at the memorial and subsequently at the photographs it seems possible that the obelisk was placed on top of a pre-existing base, perhaps of an old market cross. The account of the dedication published in the Western Gazette of 14 November 1928, states that the memorial "stands about nine feet high, and is of Portland Stone. It is erected on a base of three tiers, the stones for which had been collected from various parts of the parish, and these have been cemented together."
