Status: On subsequent site(s)
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Within a garden/park/churchyard/enclosure/Marketplace
Description: Other cross
Materials:
  • Stone Stone (any)
Lettering: Incised
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
About the memorial: A cross connected by decorated "square" set on tapering, capped & footed stem standing on a tall plinth with inset stone showing dedication. Stands on an octagonal 2 step base on a platform led to by steps. Croydon Minster was formerly known as St John the Baptist Church until it became a Minster in 2011. The memorial was previously at another site, described by the IWM Register as the "Crusader Tree" but I can find no explanatory reference for this, other than the sources cited by the IWM. A pub perhaps. The London Gardens website says it had to be moved because of the widening of nearby Church Street. The memorial overlooks a memorial garden formed from the former churchyard whch was created to accommodate the cross, so may be considered part of the same memorial. .. (See London Gardens link).
