About the memorial: The following historical information has been gleaned from records held in the Norfolk Records Office, including the minute book and accounts. The notion of a memorial to those men of the village of Honing who had given their lives in WW1 was first discussed formally at a Public Meeting in Honing on 28 July 1918 when a decision was made to examine a proposal to create a memorial plaque in the Church and to appoint a Committee. After several meetings, it was decided, in the light of general opinion in the village, instead to erect a memorial cross on 'the Parish Plain' next to the churchyard (now part of the churchyard). This new scheme was agreed at a Public Meeting on 4 March 1919. Messrs Cornish and Gaymer of North Walsham were appointed to design, construct, inscribe and erect the memorial. The design was done by Mr John Gaymer. The memorial was made of Clipsham (Lincolnshire) stone and cost 189 pounds and 18 shillings. Thirteen names were originally inscribed. It was paid for by public subscription with a list of 73 subscribers (most of which were Mr and Mrs, or families, so the total number of donors was greater). The memorial was dedicated on-site on 3 October 1919 by the Bishop of Norwich. Two additional names, of those who had by then died of wounds, were added in 1924 by Cornish and Gaymer. To the east of the church, on the right of the pathway from the parking area to the church. A Latin wheel cross, surmounting a slender, fluted pillar, atop a square, block plinth. The whole sits upon a three-stepped octagonal base.
