Status: On original site
Type: Freestanding
Location: External
Setting: Roadside
Description: Serviceman/woman sculpture
Materials:
  • Stone Granite
  • Stone Portland stone
Conflicts:
  • First World War (1914-1918)
  • Second World War (1939-1945)
About the memorial: A Portland stone statue of a uniformed soldier with rifle, standing at ease, surmounting a square pillar, adourned on each side with polished granite tablets. The front (north) facing tablet carries the general commemoration: the east and west faces list the names of the 86 fallen from WW1, and the south face lists the names of the 36 fallen (including 3 women) from WW2. The names are listed in alphabetical order, with initials, but no rank or unit details. (Those on the WW2 memorial are also commemorated on an additional memorial in St. Marys Church.) (W. J. Pearmain (WW1) and L. Leach (WW2) are also commemorated on family gravestones in Mildenhall Old Cemetery) The whole sits atop a three-tiered square pavement, surrounded by stone bollards joined by metal chains. The whole structure sits within a small traffic island at the road junction. The more observant may notice that the Lee Enfield.303 rifle has the foresight on the underside and the bayonet clip uppermost. Presumably a faulty repair job after the monument was vandalised.
