About the memorial: The memorial at St Andrew’s Psalter Lane Church, Sharrow, Sheffield, is a round Westmoreland stone plaque mounted on the outside of the Cherry Tree Road side of the church. It is beside their garden of remembrance and commemorates all from the parish that have died, noting especially those who died in the World Wars. It was installed when in 1998 the Church became an Ecumenical Partnership between St Andrews Sharrow, the Anglican Parish Church, and Psalter Lane Methodist Church. Unfortunately due to inadequate foundations St Andrews Church, built in 1869, had become unsafe such that in 1997 it was made redundant and then in 2000 it was demolished. A memorial to men killed in the First World war, consisting of two stone plaques mounted in an oak frame on the wall of the baptistry had been consecrated by the Bishop of Sheffield in 1920. About a quarter of the 104 men listed were part of the famous Sheffield Pals York and Lancaster Regiment, and were killed on the first day of he Battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916. The plaques were saved from destruction when the Church was demolished but were unsuitable to be displayed outside the Church, which in part motivated the installation of the present memorial. The plaques are now displayed in Shirley House, near the Church, (31, Psalter Lane) where it is possible to view them during the working day and evenings.
