About the memorial: The war memorial in the central Gloucestershire village of Bisley is a Cotswold limestone wheel cross on an inscribed plinth on a three-stepped base. The memorial stands in a gravelled area surrounded by metal railings in the centre of the village at the junction of the roads. Unveiled and dedicated 3 April 1921

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

The south (front) face of the plinth carries the inscription: 'TO THE GLORY OF / GOD / AND TO THE MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF BILSEY / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / SERVING THE KING / IN THE YEARS OF OUR LORD / 1914-18'. 'I saw...the souls of / them that were slain / for the word of GOD / ....and white robes were / given unto every one of / them, Rev VI. 9.11'. The west and east sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of the men who lost lives; the north face carries the inscription: 'AND ALSO A THANK TO ALMIGHTY GOD FOR THE RETURN HOME OF THEIR 90 COMRADES'. 'YEA THE LORD HATH DONE GREAT THINGS FOR US ALREADY: WHEREOF WE REJOICE, PS CXXXVI'. The roll of honour naming the men who died during the Second World War is inscribed on the four sides of the upper step of the base; the front (south) face also carries the dates: '1939 / 1945'.
