About the memorial: The war memorial stands at the top of St. Andrews Street, opposite the Church of St. Ia. There are four memorials, two of which are behind the wall in the memorial garden (as well as the Burma Star memorial). The main memorial (created in 1921) is in the form of a robust Celtic wheel cross, the column of which is heavily decorated, surmounting a pyramidal plinth upon a three-tier base. The front face bears the general commemoration to those who fell in WW1 and WW2, and the reverse bears the words 'Lest We Forget'. On the other two opposing faces are bronze plaques which list, in two columns on each, a total of 93 men and women who died in WW1. These are listed alphabetically by surname, with initials. (Note: 74 of these names are also commemorated on the WW1 shrine inside the Church of St. Ia. Also: Best, Arthur H; Hain, E; Hain, E. S; Hollow, John C; James, James H; and McWilliams, D. J., are also commemorated on family gravestones in the cemetery. In the cemetery there is a William P. Williams commemorated who does not appear on this war memorial. The following are buried in the cemetery: Cocking, J., and Nicholls, W. B.) Adjacent to this memorial are a memorial stones commemorating P M Fox who fell in Afghanistan in 2010 and W H Thomas (Korea 1953). The latter stone was moved from the Memorial Gardens to the main memorial precinct in 2013. These two memorials are on a raised, paved platform accessed through double wrought-iron gates, surrounded by a low wall surmounted by a railing. On the opposite side of the rear wall of the war memorial enclosure, either side of the steps leading down into the memorial gardens, are two bronze plaques listing, in alphabetical order, the names of 109 men and women who died in WW2. These memorials were unveiled in 1950. (Note: Cocking, L; Mitchell, W; Paynter, J. S; Perkin, D; Peters, T; Veal, H. L; and Wheeler, F., are also commemorated on family gravestones in the cemetery. In the cemetery is also commemorated W. Honey, not listed here nor by the CWGC. The following are buried in the cemetery: Abrams, S; Andrews, M. G; Carbines, R. P; Curtis, R. E. C; Pearse, S. H; Phillips, H. R; and Prynne, T. W. H.)
