About the memorial: The monument which was the work of a local man Mr. Carrick is composed of red stone. The design is of a simple nature, but nevertheless it is a beautiful piece of work. It stands close on six feet high and at the top are two reversed rifles with a wreath of laurels are engraved. In the centre is the panel bearing the names and regiments of those who were killed while above is the inscription (Crookston War Memorial) and below (1914-1919). Crookston War Memorial is situated inside gates of Inveresk Churchyard EH21 7UA . Please note that the IWM Register entitles tis memorial "Crookston School" which was in fact its former location. Crookston War Memorial was first erected at Crookston School first opened in 1902 which was a rural school between Wallyford & Whitecraig and it has the names of the 61 soldiers that were killed in action from Wallyford, Whitecraig (Deantown) & Smeaton which were all small villages in Midlothian. The Crookston War Memorial was unveiled on Saturday the 13th of September 1919 by Colonel Sir John A Hope (The Memorial when unveiled was in front of Crookston Public School,Inveresk) then moved to Inveresk Churchyard when Crookston School closed in 1958 by local councillor Mr Jimmy Grant. My dads brothers name is on the the Memorial Stone J Hadden RS Pte 908 killed in action F & F 16/5/14 (son of John & Alison Hadden who resided at 43 Forthview Wallyford) and he had been lost from the family for 95 years due to the wrong spelling of his name in Le Touret Military Cemetery _Richenbourgh-L'Avoue France as it was in the role of Honour book at the Scottish National War memorial at Edinburgh Castle and after research and help from Craig Stathem local history officer East Lothian Council and Lieutenant Colonel I Shepherd Secretary to the Trustees at The Scottish national War Memorial along with Jim McLeod & Bunty (Hadden) McNeill The CWGC had the spelling of James Hadden changed at Le Touret and in the role of Honour Book at the Scottish National War memorial at Edinburgh Castle in April 2011.
