About the memorial: The memorial is the Treble bell, one of two bells added to the ring to make a peal of twelve in 1922. The bell was cast by Messrs. Mears and Stainbank of Whitechapel and was donated by H. J. Van Tromp, a former Mayor and Freeman of Taunton, in memory of his son and three other ringers that died in the First World War. The augmentation is commemorated by a plaque in the west tower, dated 1922. The plaque is of white stone with black lettering. A bell image shown in relief is sited at each corner of the plaque. According to the account of the re-opening ceremony published in the Taunton Courier of the 25 October 1922, the bell itself is inscribed: 'To the glory of God, and in memory of Harry Van Trump, William Albert Fowler, William Fudge, and Sidney Archibald Phillips of St. Mary's Band of Ringers who fell in the Great War. This bell was presented by H. J. Van Trump, Esq., J.P., in memory of the above.' There is currently (2014-2016) a project to renew the peal of bells and its installation. All of the bells are due to be 'recast,' which will effectively create a completely new ring of bells. However, the memorial bell is intended to be retained; the current plan (2016) is to hang the bell in a frame in the south aisle of the church.
