About the memorial: A granite column, with an urn at its top, resting on a square tapered plinth containing names and text and resting on a square stone base. The face of the column contains a relief of a crossed sword and rifle set in a wreath. This War Memorial recording both The Great War of 1914 -1918 and WW2 1939 -1945 is located in Kilmuir Old Churchyard in Kilmuir in the North part of Skye and was erected about 30 yards from the Flora Macdonald monument . The granite pillar memorial is sculptured out of blocks of granite and stands about 15 feet high. The granite memorial was of such great weight that a special lorry had to be brought from Inverness to transport it from Portree to Kilmuir. On the 24th December 1923 a large crowd gathered in the KILMUIR Burial Ground for the Unveiling of the Kilmuir War Memorial . The Rev Stewart , the Parish Minister for Kilmuir , commenced the service and the Rev MacDonald , the United Free Minister led the congregation in prayer. The Inscription on the Memorial was unveiled by the local Schoolmaster, Mr John MacNab , whose two sons are commemorated on it. An oration was then given by Major Hilleary of Edinbain Lodge. The memorial lists the 12 casualties of WW1 on the front and the 3 casualties of WW2 on the rear.
