About the memorial: The memorial is a small version of the Edinburgh Mercat Cross. A thin white column headed by a small seated lion set on a large 6 sided elaborate stone plinth with names and text contained on stone slabs in its sides, being grey granite panels bearing the commemoration and names of the dead. All sitting on a 6 sided two stepped base. The memorial has inscriptions of 101 or 102 names for WW1, 19 names for WW2 and 1 name for the 1950 – 1953 Korean War. The memorial was constructed by local builder Thomas MacFarlane, whose only son John was the youngest person from Portree to die in WW1. On Thursday 16 February 1922 the memorial was unveiled and dedicated to the memory of the men who had died in WW1. The ceremony commenced with the assembled crowd singing the Psalm 100, followed by a Prayer of Invocation and an Address by Lieutenant Colonel K I MacDonald DSO of Tote. After Colonel MacDonald had unveiled the memorial, the Roll of Honour with names of the men from Portree, Sconser and Skeabost were read out. When the last of the names was read out, the newly unveiled memorial was handed over to the safe keeping of the Parish Council. After the end of WW2 the names of those killed in that war were added to the memorial and it was re dedicated. Sometime in the 1950s, the name of a National Serviceman killed in the Korean War was added.
