About the memorial: War Memorial. Dated 1921, repaired 1983. By Emery of Burnham-on-Sea, on plinth. Dressed stone. Plain plinth, with an angle-buttress at each corner, moulded cornice around its top. Octagonal sockets, a life size figure set at each corner in military dress, a soldier, a sailor, an airman, and a marine. Tapering chamfered shaft with a cruciform finial. Plinth inscribed with the names of The Fallen. An unusual and elaborate memorial. c Historic England listing entry

As the parish Councillor of East Brent Parish council, I have responsibility for the memorial.

In 2020 we noted that the memorial was starting to lean to the South and West, as a result we contacted the WMT, and subsequently had a structural survey undertaken in 2021, which confirmed the lean. The PC are now monitoring the lean monthly and keeping records. Should the lean progress beyond the limits we have set with our Structural engineer, then remedial action will be taken to install a ring beam around the perimeter, and dowel this to the memorial to maintain the position and prevent further leaning.
The WMT kindly provided a grant to the PC to assist with the cost of the Structural survey.

I represent the East Brent Parish Council, who own the memorial. In April of 2020 I noticed that the memorial appeared to be leaning to the South. I measured the lean and have continued to do so over the passed 8 months. The current lean to the South is 112mm out of plumb over its entire height.

From a visual survey it appears that the south side is subsiding and the north side rising from the ground.

On the 19th April 2021 The parish Council appointed Chris Pike Associates to undertake a full structural survey of the memorial, to establish the cause of the lean. On the 19th May 2021 a detailed report of the structural survey was submitted to the Parish council. A copy of the detailed survey has been issued to the WMT on 16th June 2021 by the Parish Council
