About the memorial: Standing at the roadside, outside the Fishermen's Mission. A Maltese wheel cross, surmounting a slender octagonal pillar, the top of which is adorned by a crest incorporating crossed swords. Below is a square plinth upon a broad, three-tiered slab base, and the whole enclosed by a metal fence. The front face of the plinth is adorned with an impressive bronze frieze depicting marching sailors and soldiers, variously carrying flags, stores, weapons and the equipment of war: the other tablets on the memorial are of slate. The face of the memorial facing the Fishermen's Mission bears the general commemoration to the men of Newlyn who gave their lives in WW1 and WW2. To its left (rear face to the frieze) is the list of 75 names for WW1, in three columns, alphabetically by surname with initials. To the left of this (rear face to the general commemoration) is the list of WW2 names, in three columns: one for the Royal Navy (22 names); one for the Army 20 (names); and one for the Royal Air Force (14 names) and Merchant Navy (2 names); and one for the Korean War added. Below there is an additional name for a WW2 RAF officer and a soldier killed in Afghanistan in 2010. [I couldn't find the Afghanistan name on my visit, and checked several times]. The memorial was unveiled on 23 July 1920 by Sir Arthur Quiller Couch with the WW2 addition being unveiled and dedicated by the Rev Pearson, minister of Newlyn Centenary Methodist Church, on 7 November 1948.
