A tall fluted classical column with an ionic capital set on an octagonal plinth, containing names, standing on a 2 stepped base. A wreath, thistle, rose and shamrock are carved in relief around the capital. The memorial is situated in gardens. The design is that of a Pillar of Victory – a class of monument which has been used from earliest times, especially by the Romans. The memorial is constructed of Morayshire freestone is that of a 31 ft tall freestone fluted classical column with Roman ionic capital set on an unusual 8 ft high by 7 ft wide octagonal pedestal which rests on a low plinth. A wreath, thistle, rose and shamrock are carved in relief around the capital. The original design was by Messers A Marshall MacKenzie & Son (Aberdeen), the stonework by Mr D Ross (Forres) and the bronzework by Walter Simpson (Aberdeen). During the early WW1 years, commemoration was underway with roll of honours being produced by local churches and publication. After WW1, with money raised from public subscription, the memorial was constructed and incorporated 3 large bronze panels listing some 304 names. On Sunday 15 January 1922, a prayer of dedication by Rev J M Little preceded the commemoration and unveiling service by Brodie of Brodie DSO MC (Lord Lieutenant of Nairnshire). Following the end of WW2, an appeal for public donations eventually led to three further large bronze plaques being added to the base of the memorial listing some 116 names. On Sunday 17 August 1952, a prayer of dedication by Rev D M MacDonald preceded the unveiling of the new additional plaques by Colonel the Hon. Ian M Campbell (HM Lieutenant for the County of Nairn), followed by words of dedication by Rev MacDonald. A further 2 small plaques listing some 6 names were added to commemorate those lost in the post 1945 conflicts in Korean, Aden, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afganistan.
