About the memorial: A nowy-headed brass plaque originally surrounded by green faience tiles but now with a wooden frame. The plaque has a raised narrow border with the Wyvern crest of the Midland Railway in relief at the head. The commemoration is in a frieze at the head and the names are in four panels below. The inscription is in raised upright capital lettering polished to contrast the metallic colour against the black painted stippled ground. The frame is of plain flat wood, painted white. It is located on the wall of platform 1. The memorial was originally located in the main entrance to the station opposite the General Manager's and Secretary's doors. The memorial was relocated when the original station was completely rebuilt about 1985. The men named were from throughout the large Midland Railway network.
