About the memorial: Standing on the lawn in front of the old grammar school building, overlooking Cildwrn Road. (Now Pencraig Technical College). A stone figure of a soldier wearing a service dress hat, hands resting on a reversed rifle (resting on arms reversed), standing on a tapered plinth of granite blocks, the front face adorned with a wreath of laurels, below which is a polished granite tablet bearing the names of 34 men on the main tablet, below which is a smaller tablet listing 4 further names who also died. The names are listed in order of year of death, giving first name and other forenames or initials, surname, village or town of residence, where killed (theatre or region) and the year. The main tablet is headed 'Killed' although there are two shown as 'Died of Wounds', the current plaque replaces the original. The plinth surmounts a tapered base upon which, in relief' are the dates 1914 - 1918, and around the lower base are engraved all the theatres of war related to WW1.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.
