About the memorial: A cross about 12 foot high on a column above a substantial plinth bearing an inscription. Erected in 1922 by the Dowager Countess of Suffolk and Berkshire after her husband the 19th Earl had been killed during the War. She paid for all the work herself, less an amount of £43/14/6 raised by Parish subscription. Contained within a small memorial garden beside the road. Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.

The main inscription, spread over 3 faces of the plinth, reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN WHO WENT FORTH FROM CHARLTON VILLAGE TO TAKE PART IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 AND WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR THEIR COUNTRY AND THE LIBERTY OF MANKIND THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY THEIR GRATEFUL FRIENDS AND RELATIVES IN THIS PLACE', with names recorded below the inscription on all 3 faces. A second inscription on a 4th face of the plinth reads: 'AND IN THE WAR OF 1939-1945' with names recorded below it and on a 5th face.
