About the memorial: On the Green outside All Saints' Church stands a Cenotaph approximately 12 feet high inscribed on 4 sides. The Unveiling of the Sutton Courtenay War Memorial took place on 22nd May 1920. The Sutton Courtenay War Memorial is very unusual in that it lists every man from the village who served in the Great War - either at home or overseas - as well as those who were killed or wounded. The total number is 160: 28 served at home, 77 overseas, 23 were wounded and 32 were killed: this out of a total population of 790. But there are discrepancies between the brass plaque which was erected in the Church in 1956 and the War Memorial - 31 war dead on the Memorial and only 29 in the Church. Philip Jenkins, Joseph Carter and Claud Savage are not on the plaque; and James Bird appears on the plaque but not on the War Memorial. These are mysteries that may never be cleared up. The War Memorial is unusual in other ways - it was unveiled by H H Asquith, a former Prime Minister and resident of the village (Appendix 2). There are 2 photographs of that event kept in the Berkshire Records Office, and a letter from Mrs E M Osborn dated 16 November 1973 points out some of those in the photograph: Mr Asquith, Mrs Asquith, Lady Violet Bonham Carter, Mr Basford, Cecil Allen, Fred Lacey and Rev Seymour Rendall. Mrs Osborn also mentions the stonemason who had made the Memorial, her uncle, Mr Cooper of Milton.
