On archway: Stourbridge War Memorial Athletic Ground. HER Number: 7810 Name: Stourbridge War Memorial Athletic Ground; Memorial Arch and Gates. Summary Memorial Arch and Gates to Stourbridge Memorial Athletic Ground, at Holloway End, Amblecote, opened by Ernest Stevens on the 18th December 1928. The ground was purchased by Stourbridge Borough Council in 1927 for the purpose of creating a suitable war memorial and Ernest Stevens a millionaire hollowware manufacturer became a major benefactor. The Athletic Ground's principal memorial feature, erected in 1928, is a monumental arched entrance of red brick designed by Frederick Woodward. The “stepped-up” top of the structure is considered to be a reference to Lutyens' Thiepval Arch that commemorates the fallen of the Battle of the Somme. The arch was built with dark red brick from the Ketley Brick Company and has ornate wrought iron gates by Hill and Smith of Brierley Hill and flanking brick walls fronting High Street. Inside this entrance is an extensive open area (a holding space for spectators or a parking area) along whose western edge is a single storey turnstile block, a gift from Ernest Stevens in 1932.
