About the memorial: Stone memorial on the edge of Birley Wood, off Wigan Lower Road. Built to hold the plaque installed in 1920 by the Wigan Coal and Iron Company to commemorate the men from nearby Taylor Pit and Slack Washer and John Pit collieries. (One of 19 installed by the Company at its Pits and Works). Most were installed on offices etc., except for this one, built by the miners from stone brought out of John Pit. The plaque was removed, presumably on the closure of John Pit in 1954, and was installed in the Offices of Standish with Langtree UDC on High Street, Standish. When Victoria Pit (1959) and Giants Hall Pit (1961) closed, their plaques were also transferred to the Council Offices. Following Local Government reorganisation in 1974 the area and the offices came under Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, who demolished the building in 1989. Some time after that the three plaques were installed in the Peace Gate of St Wilfrid's Parish Church, Standish (Ref. 169694), where they were joined in about 2004 by the plaques of Prospect Pit (closed 1934) and Langtree Pit (closed 1932). In the 1990s Wigan MBC Councillor John O'Neill gathered funds and support to restore the cairn, including installing a copy of the plaque. However, vandalism of restoration work to the cairn caused second thoughts about installing the plaque in such a remote spot. Thus when the replacement plaque was struck around 2000, it was placed outside St Anne's Church in Shevington (Ref #251031).
