About the memorial: Overlooking the North Sea, the memorial is located in a small park on the cliff top off Marine Road, close to the Rocks Hotel. Originally sited at the entrance to the town's West Promenade, it was moved to this nearby position in 1989 when threatened by cliff erosion. Designed by Edinburgh architect FEB Blanc, and erected by George Cunningham, builder, Dunbar, it was unveiled and dedicated on Sunday, 3rd July, 1921 "in the presence of several thousands of spectators" (report in "Haddingtonshire Courier" 8th July, 1921). The memorial takes the form of an elegant Celtic Cross (without nimbus) and base of Creetown white granite. It sits on a stepped Catcraig limestone plinth, and at the head of the Cross is a bronze Crucifix, with "IHS" in interwoven bronze lettering on the elevation facing the sea. Almost a century old, the memorial, which is in the ownership of East Lothian Council, has suffered from the effects of the weather. In consultation with the local community, Dunbar Community Council has prepared proposals for its conservation and enhancement, for which it is now seeking to raise funding.

IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THE BURGH & PARISH OF DUNBAR WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 " THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" AND IN WORLD WAR 1939-1945

The names of the Fallen are in attached black painted lead lettering. The WWI names are displayed on all four elevations of the base of the white granite Celtic Cross (without nimbus). The Cross and base sit on a stepped Catcraig limestone plinth, the upper level of which bears white granite panels on two elevations with WWII names, and one from the Malaya conflict of 1949.
