About the memorial: Corten steel statue with rusty red patina, created by artist Ray Lonsdale. It depicts a First World War soldier, wearing boots, puttees, greatcoat and tin hat, sitting on an ammunition box, with downcast eyes, holding the barrel of his grounded rifle in his right hand. It is officially named Eleven-O-One, referring to the first minute of peace as the armistice came into force, but is more popularly known as “Tommy”. From the information available, this sculpture appears to be public art rather than a war memorial. Whilst there is no legal definition of a war memorial and the Trust recognises that public perception often differs on this matter, the Trust defines war memorials for the purposes of funding, please see www.warmemorials.org/uploads/publications/53.pdf.

As a conservation charity which gives grants War Memorials Trust can support repair and conservation works that follow best conservation practice. Grants are awarded from funds raised by the charity so money available is limited and is therefore focused on eligible war memorials.

War Memorials Trust’s Definition of a war memorial for funding purposes helpsheet explains which war memorials are eligible and ineligible for funding.

As a charity, War Memorials Trust relies on voluntary donations and every contribution, no matter how large or small, makes a really big difference to our work. Your donation will help protect and conserve war memorials for future generations so please support War Memorials Trust’s work.
