About the memorial: Ornate rectangular bronze plaque within a carved oak surround. Tracery design in relief at the top of the plaque below which are 2 shields showing the Abbey crest and a crest with cross & lion on them Frame has foliate design carved around three sides of it and beading on the outside. This memorial survived a disastrous fire at the Church in 2006. The Church only reopened in March 2014 and as of May 13th 2014 the plaque is still in store, not yet back on the wall. There are significant differences in the names on this memorial and the village memorial by the Methodist Church- both should be consulted to get the full picture

This is the full description- Ornate Rectangular Brass Plaque within a carved oak surround. The arms of the Abbey of Holme Cultram-a lion rampant and a cross-are placed on the left side of the brass. The arms have their counterpart on the right side with the seal of the Abbey (copied from the original at the British Museum). The Blessed Virgin is seen crowned, holding the Divine Infant in her left arm and standing on a shield (supported by the hands of two monks whose heads only appear besides), which displays 3 lions passant guardant-the arms of England-in allusion to the patronage which since the time of Henry II was vested in the crown. On either side of the canopy is a small pointed and crochetted niche, the dexter containing a full length representation of the Abbot with staff and book, perhaps intended for St Robert, the founder of the Cistercian order, or for St Bernard of Clairvaux, the sinister at the same length, the figure of Henry II, with crown and sceptre. In the base is a lion drawn from the arms above, dormant. Around the rim is the lettering "Si commene abbatis et conventas de Holm Coltram" [the common seal of the Abbot and Convent of Holme Cultram]
