About the memorial: War memorial cross designed by R H Butterworth in memory of those from Milford who lost their lives during the First World War with later Second World War names added. Butterworth designed the memorial as a tribute to his brother who is remembered on the memorial. Butterworth was also commissioned by Shackleford, a neighbouring village, to oversee the same designed war memorial to commemorate their own men who had made the supreme sacrifice. The initial cost in 1921 was £315 and all funds were raised by public subscription. Mr A Mitchell of Witley supplied the cross, Mr E Enticknap constructed most of the foundations and Entiknap Brothers, a local building firm from Wormley, constructed the monument. There are 45 names recorded on the memorial from the First World War and 15 names from the Second World War. The names are carved on panels of York stone and the surrounding wall is constructed from Bargate stone with York coping stones on top.
