About the memorial: Rough Hewn limestone slab with a dressed limestone slab for the names and dedication, located at the south end of the Churchyard away from the Church. NOTE-Revd Theodore Bayley Hardy was born at Exeter in 1863. He was a schoolmaster, and was then ordained in 1898. He then became Headmaster of Bentham Grammar School but retired to be Vicar of Hutton Roof in 1913. He volunteered for service as a Chaplain on the outbreak of war, but was not accepted because of his health until August 1916. He was awarded the VC for rescuing wounded men under heavy fire in 3 separate incidents on 5, 25 & 27 April 1918. It was awarded by the King on 9th August 1918, and he was appointed ‘Chaplain to His Majesty’ on 17 September 1918 partly as an attempt to lure him away from the battlefield. However he was killed in action on 18 October 1918 just 3 days before his 55th birthday. He is believed to have been the most decorated non-combatant of the war. Since 1988 there has been a memorial service on the closest Sunday to his death at Hutton Roof Church. A film of his life was made in 2010 by Charlie Shea-Simonds for the Museum of Army Chaplaincy. See also a separate memorial to him on this website at Carlisle Cathedral.
