About the memorial: Polished Black Granite Memorial. The camp had previously opened on 1 July 1939. Throughout WW2 it was a training camp for the 13th AA and 23rd Searchlight Divisions of the Royal Armoured Militia, respectively known as Gillman and Wardrop Camps. After the war it was used for National Service training by the Royal Armoured Corps before becoming the Army Apprentice School from 11 January 1960 when it was renamed. It closed in July 1969 with general demolition following in 1971. In 1989 the site became an official traveller’s camp.

HADRIAN’S CAMP/Former Home of the Army Apprentice School/1959-1969/IN 1959 A SMALL GROUP OF STAFF ARRIVED AT HADRIAN’S CAMP/TO OPEN THE NEW APPRENTICE SCHOOL IN 1960. THEIR ENTHUSIASM,/HARD WORK, AND IMAGINATION IN THOSE EARLY DAYS LAID THE/FOUNDATIONS FOR THE WELL ESTABLISHED SCHOOL THAT GREETED/ALL WHO ARRIVED AT HADRIAN’S CAMP./ IN 1966 THE SCHOOL BECAME A COLLEGE AND THE TRADITIONAL/THREE YEAR APPRENTICE COURSES WERE CHANGED TO COMPLETE THE TRAINING IN ONLY TWO YEARS/ IN THE NINE YEARS OF ITS EXISTENCE 2785 APPRENTICES PASSED/THROUGH THESE GATES (INCLUDING THE 270 WHO ORIGINALLY/CAME FROM ARBORFIELD AND CHEPSTOW TO SET UP THE SCHOOL)/AND THE GOOD IMAGE OF THE ARMY THAT WAS CREATED IN/HADRIAN’S CAMP HAS BEEN REFLECTED IN THE WORLD/WHEREVER THE BRITISH SOLDIER WAS TO BE FOUND./ This Memorial was erected by the members of Hadrian’s Old Boys Association/21st September 2013/ ARTE SUPERBIA, ET CONATU/ SKILL, PRIDE AND ENDEAVOUR/
