About the memorial: Above the Inscription a large Trophy of Arms, with swords, cannon and flag. Situated in the NE corner of the Bolton Parish Church. Unveiled 1814.

To the memory of _ LIEUT. ROBERT KNOWLES a native of this_ Parish who volunteered MAY 6, 1811 from the 1st _ Royal Lancs. Militia into the 7th Regiment of _ FUSILIERS, then united with the British Army in the _ expulsion of the French from Spain. he distinguished _ himself at the taking of CIUDAD RODRIGO & at _ BARDAJOS, where he commanded part of a detachement _ appointed to storm FORT ST. ROQUE - such was his intrepidity _ that by first mounting the wall & _ succeeded in his enterprise he opened the gates _ to the remainder of the detachment and received the _ command of the Fort. He behaved with much Courage at _ SALAMANCA & VITTORIA, at the former of which places _ he was severely wounded. This brave young man _ fell in the hard contested action at THE PASS OF _ RONCEVALLES IN THE PYRENEES JULY 25, 1813 in the _ 24th year of his age. _ This monument is erected as a just tribute to so _ much Heroism and worth by his fellow townsmen _ A.D.1816.
