About the memorial: A 14m high polished steel arch set above paving slabs depicting the points of the compass and countries involved in the First World War. Stone seats are to one side of the arch, each backed with an engraved plaque commemorating individuals or with stories of the many millions of men and women who passed through Folkestone to the conflict as well as Belgian refugees, Canadians encamped in the area and Chinese labourers. The charity Step Short was responsible for the installation. Step short was the order given to the many soldiers, nurses and civilians as they marched down the steep hill to the harbour to awaiting ships. The arch was dedicated by HRH Prince Henry of Wales on the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War – 4th August 2014.
