About the memorial: War memorial. Probably c.1920. Limestone ashlar. Square plan on base of 3 steps. Chamfered plinth with moulded string course to bottom and cornice to top; circular corner shafts surmounted by ball finials. Steep pyramidal cap with ball finial has gabled lucarnes with blind trefoils. Raised stone panels to each side, north inscribed with the names of those killed in First World War, west with the names of those killed in Second World War. Panels to south and east have inscriptions "TO LIVE IN HEARTS WE LEAVE/BEHIND IS NOT TO DIE" and "YOU GAVE YOUR BEST/THEN LAID YOU WEARY DOWN/AND TOOK YOUR REST" respectively. c Historic England listing entry. Just around the corner is another memorial of similar but even more ornate design. This is a Victorian memorial fountain to Mr J H Langston. Make sure you find the right one.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.
