About the memorial: Chobham Recreation Ground was created as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the 1914-18 conflict. A Chobham War Memorial charity was formed in 1920 to buy six acres of meadowlands using funds raised by public subscription. In 1925, another two acres were purchased. This charity is now called the Chobham Recreation Ground Charitable Trust, Charity number 305004. Chobham Parish Council is the trustee and manages the day to day running of the recreation ground and its facilities. In 1951 Chobham, wanting to honour its war dead from the 1939-45 war, launched another public fundraising initiative, raising funds to build a new formal entrance to the ground, comprising metalwork gates and a supporting wall, to create a memorial garden and to plant 32 trees, one in memory for each of the men who had died. The names of these men are listed on a memorial screen in the Parish Church of St Lawrence.
