Panelling - This wreath was placed on the above Queen's colour of the 1st Battalion The 24th Regiment by Her Majesty Queen Victoria to commemorate the devoted gallantry of Lieutenant and Adjutant T. Melvill and Lieutenant N.J.A. Coghill who gave their lives to save that Colour from the hands of the enemy on 22nd January 1879 and in recognition of the noble defence of Rorke's Drift. As a lasting memorial of Her gracious act Her Majesty commanded that a silver replica should be borne for evermore on the Queens Colour of both Battalions of the Regiment. When the last man of the 24th Regiment fell at Isandhlwana the Zulus looted the battlefield and carried off the 2nd Battalion Colours. Some weeks later the Colour staff and crown of the Queens Colour were found in a Zulu Kraal and were carried by the 2nd Battalion on parade until new Colours were presented on 6th August 1882. The staff which is displayed above was then offered to Her Majesty who graciously accepted it. It was kept in Windsor Castle until handed over to the Colonel of the Regiment on 25th July 1923 by His Majesty King George V.
