About the memorial: War memorial youth club dedicated to those from the Cameron Highlanders who lost their lives during the Second World War. Book of Remembrance and Brass plaque inside. The full IWM Register entry is as follows - Rather than build a Cenotaph, the leaders of the Regiment felt a fitting memorial was a Boys’ Club, offering young men an alternative to Boys Brigade or Boy Scouts. The club contains an entrance way, with an oak panel, opposite the doors, carved with the Battle Honours and a Book of the Dead, containing the names of all Cameron Highlanders who fell in the two Great Wars. The intention was to give the boys of the town a place where they could participate in male-led activities, with the older boys and leaders providing example to the young men. The club enjoyed immediate success, open five nights a week as regular attendance was not mandatory. It offered a wide range of activities and included a gymnasium, woodworking shop, a library, and other rooms given over to activities such as fly tying, table tennis, and billiards. By 1960, the club was noted for its presentations of one act plays in local drama festivals. It was also an early participant in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Since its days as a boy’s club the Centre’s activities have expanded to encompass those of a Community Centre meeting the needs of all ages. The centre is now run in partnership between High Life Highland, and the voluntary Management Committee. Key Features: The Cameron Youth Centre has a varied programme including – • High 5’s After School Club, including school holiday club • High Life Highland Senior Youth Club • Central Work Club • Many Indoor Bowling groups • Dog Training Classes on 2 nights • Lip Reading Classes • Football and Sports • Broadband connected IT suite with 7 laptops • Rooms available to hire, for meetings, classes, training courses, social activities, youth clubs etc Cameron Youth Centre, Planefield Road, Inverness, IV3 5DN 01463 234785 Email Us Cameron Youth Centre Latest From Twitter RT @HLHSport: Schools out for another week why not #choosetolead with our leadership programme.
