About the memorial: The war memorial was originally a Clock Tower. The clock was removed in 1989 as there was a problem with maintenance. It was replaced with a panel bearing a cross in bas-relief.The memorial was built from village subscriptions. The village raised £81.10.9d, further donations were received from the Ladies Flower Show Committee and a collection at the unveiling ceremony on 25th October 1919 which were added to the full cost of £97.11s.7d. The memorial was designed by L.J. Watts Ltd. Castle Works, Colchester and built by local builder Frank. W. Clampin. Mr Playle donated the piece of land at the corner of Ponders Road and Church Road where it was built. The memorial is situated within a boundary wall on the edge of the garden of Swiss Cottages. In 2015 Fordham Local History Society were successful in obtaining a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a community project which focused on Fordham and its war memorial. Research by the project leader Wendy Shepherd discovered that there were 12 men of Fordham not included on the memorial. These were added in May 2017 and the clock was also reinstated the week in November 2017 ready for the Remembrance Day Service. The replacement clockface slightly differs in design to the original.
