About the memorial: To provide and place a Memorial Cross in the churchyard of the Parish Church of South Somercotes in memory of the parishioners who laid down their lives in the Great War. That the said cross is to be placed in the North East corner of the said churchyard and is to be nine feet six inches in height and about three feet square at the base A celtic cross of rough granite on which a sword is represented stands on a trapezium plinth on the front face of which is a smooth panel on which the names of those lost are shown in lead letters. The height of the cross and plinth is 2600mm, standing on a concrete base of 1429mm x 930mm Unveiled Sunday 24th October 1920, by Major Cordeaux, C.B.E., dedicated by the Rev. Canon S. A. Johnston.
