About the memorial: Sculpture dedicated to Admiral Nelson who lost his life at Trafalgar. In the South Transept, centre aisle, Nelson stands on a pedestal in his Peer Robes, left hand resting on an anchor, with British lion on his right and Britannia on his left with two midshipmen. FRIEZE ON PEDESTAL OF A SEA GOD AND TWO SPHINXES Sculpted marble free-standing monument with a life-size statue of Admiral Nelson on a circular podium carved in relief with figures, an allegorical female figure instructing two boys below, a crouching lion to the right. The commemorated has a thick fur-lined cloak over his right shoulder, his left hand rests on the knot of a large coil of rope which is tied to an anchor. The statue stands on a large circular podium inscribed and carved in relief with figures of river gods and other symbols. On the left a female allegorical figure with plumed helmet and masked breastplate guides two boys who look up at the commemorated (one of the boys holds a sextant). At the right a lion crouches beside the podium. The whole rests on a low rectangular podium with the memorial inscription, on a rectangular stone base.

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.
