About the memorial: Listed Grade II; designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Unveiled by Rudyard Kipling. Blind wheelhead cross 3m tall; octagonal shaft incised on front with reversed sword and inscribed at foot. Three tiered plinth: first circular tier carved with inscription in low relief. The octagonal central tier contains the principal incised inscriptions: a dedicatory inscription on three of the faces, and the names of the 15 men of Etchingham who died in the Great War on the remaining 5 faces. A three-stepped octagonal base has an incised horizontal tablet let into the upper step, commemorating the five men who died in the Second World War. Designer: Herbert Baker English Heritage "This memorial cross is made from Portland stone and commemorates 15 local servicemen who died in the First World War and five men who died in the Second World War. It was unveiled in 1920 by author and poet Rudyard Kipling who was also a member of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. He lived in nearby Burwash, and paid Baker's fee."

Grants to support the repair and conservation of war memorials are available from the charity War Memorials Trust if it has raised funds. Support is focused on war memorials in Very bad or Poor condition or where there is a serious Concern.

Before applying for a grant you should read the advice available on War Memorials Trust`s website. The What we can and cannot fund helpsheet explains what types of work the charity can fund.

If you believe your project is eligible for a grant you should complete the Pre-application enquiry form. You will need to be registered and logged in to complete this.

The Pre-application enquiry form is a series of questions to see if your project is eligible. If it is, you will need to provide further details and submit current colour photographs of the war memorial in either a png, gif, jpg or jpeg format.

You can save your Pre-application enquiry form as you go along. Once submitted War Memorials Trust will respond.
