Nurse, Voluntary Aid Detachment, Red Cross Society. Died 8th February 1916 aged 26. Born in 1889 at Malton, Yorkshire, daughter of John and Mary Eliza of Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. She served in a Military Hospital in Malta from 2nd September 1915 to 12th January 1916. (B.A.) Lieutenant , 3rd attached to 2nd Yorkshire Regiment. Died 26th September 1915. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France BANKS George Henry. Private 405183, 3rd Canadian Infantry. Born 24th December 1876 died 13th June 1916. Son of John and Sarah of Dodworth, Yorkshire and husband of Winifred Jessie, (nee Whitlow) of 123 Sandy Mount Road, Wath on Dearne, near Rotherham, Yorkshire, occupation in 1911, coal miner. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. SOUTHAM, Joseph William. Lance Corporal 2405, 1/6th Durham Light Infantry died 26th April 1915 aged 33. Son of Charles and Elizabeth Southam, of Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire, husband of Mary Hannah Southam, of 64, Surtees St., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. BACKHOUSE Walter. Private 59315, 26th Royal Fusiliers, died 12th December 1917 aged 37. Son of Richard and Mary Elizabeth Backhouse, of Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. At rest in Giavera British Cemetery Arcade, Italy BARKER John Joseph. Private 21102, 1st Coldstream Guards. Son of Fred and Alice Mary Bray, of Bradshaw Rd., Honley, Huddersfield. At rest in Mindel Trench British Cemetery, St Laurent-Blangy, France (It may well be the following soldier) BRAY William, Private 2473, 5th Yorkshire Regiment (Yorkshire Hussars) died of wounds 17th November 1916 aged 24. Born at Whenby Terrington, Yorkshire ( near Sheriff Hutton)and enlisted at Malton, Yorkshire. Grandson of Harry and Louisa Bray, of The Street, Pakenham, Bury St. Edmund's. At rest in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. CATTLE John Robert. Private 28825 East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 165699 Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 23rd August 1918 aged 36. Son of William and Margaret of the Post Office, Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. At rest in Poziers British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France COLLINS George Ernest. Private 40710, 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment, formerly 35659, South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 21st September 1918. Born at East Gilling and lived at Strensall both in Yorkshire. Husband of Annie Elizabeth who was granted a war gratuity on the 1st December 1919. Son of William and Maria of East Gilling. In 1911 he was now married and he was living with his wife at Thornton Le Clay, Yorkshire, occupation, head horseman on a farm. Commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France. HAINES Robert. Private 203494, 1/4th York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 2830, Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 14th September 1916. Lived at Strensall, enlisted at Malton, both in Yorkshire. Son of William and Sarah Ann of High Roans, Strensall, Yorkshire, previously Lilling Green, Strensall. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. HILL Arthur. Private R/19397, 21st King's Royal Rifle Corps. Died 17th September 1916 aged 26. Son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Hill, of Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. HODGSON Percy. Private 42148, 17th Manchester Regiment. Killed in action on the 1st August 1917 aged 24. Son of George Lund Hodgson and Mary of Sheriff Hutton. Commemorated on his parents memorial in St Helen and Holy Cross, Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. He is commemorated on the Durham Cemetery Memorial, 78. China Wall, Perth Cemetery, Belgium. HUBIE Robert. Sergeant 77311, 7th Canadian Infantry. Born 23rd November 1879 at Selby, Yorkshire England and died 3rd June 1916, aged 36. He was living at 872 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. His brother Thomas Frazer of the same address was his next of kin. enlisted on the 9th November 1914 at Victoria, British Columbia aged 34, occupation, rancher. He had previously served with 5 years with the 3rd Royal Fusiliers. Son of Ernest John and Edith Marion of Victoria Cottage, York Road, Barlby, Yorkshire. Born at Hovingham, enlisted at Easingwold, both in Yorkshire. Son of John Blakelock and Rebecca Mary of 9 Pump Alley West Old Maltongate, Malton, Yorkshire. NELSON Edward. Driver 53722, 72nd Field Coy, Royal Engineers. Died 2nd May 1916. Born in 1894 to William and Annie, of Sheriff Hutton, York. In 1911 he was waggoner on the farm of Mrs Elizabeth Jane Burgess, Mowthorp Welburn, Yorkshire At rest in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq. NELSON George Valentine. Private 29010, 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment. Killed in action 23rd March 1917. Son of George and Annie of Lillings Ambo, Yorkshire. In 1911 he was living with his father, wife and daughter, Gertrude aged 5 months at Sheriff Hutton Bridge, Strensall, Yorkshire, his occupation, farm labourer. His widow Maud Mary, nee Hardy was granted a war gratuity on the 2nd July 1917, revised on the 26th November 1917, now called Mrs Maud Mary Pallister, wife of William. Their son, William Richard was killed in World War Two. PAYNE William Albert. Private 27906, 7th Yorkshire Hussars, killed in action 8th February 1917. Native of Sheriff Hutton, son of William and Martha of Sheriff Hutton. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. RICHARDSON Tom. Private 27917, 12th West Yorkshire Regiment. Died 9th September 1916 aged 28. Son of Tom and Sarah Hannah Richardson, of Sheriff Hutton, York, husband of Mary Richardson, of 221, Woodhouse Lane, Leeds. At rest in Englebelmer Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. SPENCE Anthony Crosby. Gunner/ Signaller 152412, B Battery, 113th Army Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died 15th October 1918. He lived at 62 Park Grove, York City. His effects went to his sister Sarah Spence At rest in Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium. SPENCER Charles Thomas. Private 15799, 9th West Yorkshire Regiment. Died 9th August 1915 aged 24. Husband of Margaret Spencer, of Sheriff Hutton, York. Son of Joseph and Sarah Ann Smith, of Lilling, Flaxton, Yorkshire. Born at Deeping Lincolnshire and lived at Flaxton, Yorkshire. Son of Sarah Ann who was granted a war gratuity on the 23rd January 1919. At rest in Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France WARING George. Private 5/44914, 14th Yorkshire Hussars, Reserve Infantry. Died at the Walkergate Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne on the 23rd March 1917 of Cerebrospinal Fever. His effects went to Emily Waring, widow. Born at Kirbymoorside and lived at Sheriff Hutton, both in Yorkshire. Son of William and Jane of 41 Park Road, Leeds He married Emily Hurworth on the 1st January 1908 at Beeston Hill, Leeds. In 1911 he was living with his wife and daughter, Dorrit, at 1 Views Terrace Pickering, Yorkshire, occupation school master. He left was widow and two children. Dorrit born 19th August 1908 at Pickering and John Edmund, born 6th November 1916 also at Pickering, Yorkshire. Commemorated on a Screen Wall in Lawnswood Cemetery, Leeds, Yorkshire. Son of Albert and Louisa Atkinson, of Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. Commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial, Burma. BRADSHAW Leslie Eric. Corporal Home Guard, 7th North Riding Malton Battalion died 17th August 1943 aged 44. Son of Robert and Beatrice Mary Bradshaw; husband of Marguerite Bradshaw, of Bulmer. At rest in St Helen and Holy Cross Churchyard, Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire EGERTON Edward Gervase. Mentioned in Despatches. Lieutenant, Royal Navy, Born 25th July 1920 and was killed in action during the attack on Dieppe on Wednesday 19th August 1942 aged 22 while in command of H.M.S. Chasseur 13. Son of Vice-Admiral (Henry) Jack Egerton, C.B., and Marion Egerton, of Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. He was buried at sea. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire. MYERS Arthur. PALLISTER William Richard. Flight Sergeant, Air Gunner 627672, 35 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 10th August 1943 aged 23. Son of William and Maud Mary Pallister, (formerly Nelson, nee Hardy) of Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire. Maud's first husband George Valentine Nelson was killed in action in the Great War.
